Follow these tips to stay safe in road construction zones

Many people say the Midwest has two seasons: winter and road construction. You probably dislike the rough condition of the roads after the snow melts. Yet, if you’re like most drivers, you might also get upset about the efforts dedicated to making necessary repairs.

You know you can’t have things both ways, although you might get upset about the temporary inconvenience of work zones, regardless of crews’ attempts to maintain safe roadways. However, while road construction often slows down traffic for a bit, there are some ways you should increase your safety, and that of those around you, in work areas.

Three safety tips for road construction zones

Thousands of people have died due to accidents within work zones, while hundreds of thousands have suffered injuries. However, many motor vehicle accidents are preventable, and exercising defensive driving techniques can help you navigate through a work area without incident.

As you encounter road construction, remember to:

  • Focus your attention on the road. Work zones don’t often provide additional space for your vehicle. Additionally, people may be working very close to the cars passing through a designated area. Slow down and beware of potential hazards as you make your way through the construction zone.
  • Have patience. Road construction typically increases your drive time, and it’s natural to feel disrupted. However, although your drive might take longer than usual, trying to get out of the work zone quickly isn’t worth putting a worker’s life in jeopardy.
  • Be prepared. It’s difficult to predict when a worker or piece of equipment will need to make use of some space in your lane. Even though this might not happen directly in front of you, other vehicles may need to stop unexpectedly. Maintaining a slow speed and increased following distance can allow you adequate time to respond accordingly.

As always, keep safety your primary consideration when you get in the driver’s seat. And the next time you feel annoyed about a road construction delay, be thankful that untreated potholes, cracks and ruts will not cause expensive damage to your vehicle.

If you are involved in an accident in a road construction zone, don't wait to seek legal help. Contact our office to schedule a free consultation.
